The town, which enjoys a rich history, takes its name from the Eleanor Crosses, one which is located within the town centre.
The Eleanor Crosses were a series of twelve tall and lavishly decorated stone monuments topped with crosses erected in a line down part of the east of England.
King Edward I had them constructed between 1291 and about 1295 in memory of his beloved wife Eleanor of Castile.
The King and Queen had been married for 36 years and she stayed by the King’s side throughout his many travels.
She died in the East Midlands in November 1290 while on a royal progress. Erected in her memory, the crosses marked the nightly resting-places along the route taken when her body was transported to Westminster Abbey.
Three of those twelve tall ornate stone monuments are intact, with Waltham Cross possessing one of them. Why not take a look at the town’s Eleanor Cross after your shopping trip to The Brookfield Shopping Centre while you’re in the area?
